Born in Dungun, Terengganu, Malaysia, Valerie Chong’s life has been a testament to the power of perseverance and vision.
She completed her A-level in science in Taylors’ College. However, her thirst for law led her to take up the law degree and completing it in Leeds University in the United Kingdom, in 2007 with invaluable experiences.
Valerie’s professional journey is marked by significant achievements and contributions. Started as the Legal Executive in Immigration Department at Shearn Delamore & Co in October 2007 had sharpened her skills and knowledge in the immigration law. She has since practice immigration law until today to serve clients at needs. Her dedication at work had gained recognition from Ms. See Guat Har, who was the partner of Shearn Delamore & Co and they had remained in touch ever since.
She then continued her chambering at Lee Swee Seng & Co assisting in general litigation and banking litigation under the tutelage of her master Mr. Annou Xavier who had taught her the skills in advocacy in litigation as well as the importance to serve clients with professionalism. Their relationship does not stop after completion of chambering but continued to work together in cases for the best interest of clients, even until today.
After the completion of chambering, she continued her practice in the area of general litigation in the firm of Messrs. TH Liew and Messrs. Jerald Gomez & Associates. At the early years of her practice, she was bold to handle trials and hearings independently in Court from lower Court to appellate Courts. She was also given the opportunity to venture into the area of conveyancing and corporate in the firm of Messrs. Chur Associates later on.
In 2012, she was made a partner in Messrs. Goh Wong Pereira and her strength in managing the firm and handling cases in the area of general litigation, property and immigration had grown significantly and propelled her to set up Messes Valerie Chong & Co in 2013 to serve clients better.
Valerie is highly regarded for her expertise in dispute resolution, strategizing and Strata Management, garnering a reputation as the best in the cases she handles.
In 2020, her professional accolades extend beyond the legal domain when she was appointed by the Ministry of Housing and Local Government as the President of the Strata Tribunal. As the President of the Strata Tribunal, she has brought fresh perspectives and innovative solutions, earning recognition as the youngest president in the tribunal’s history. She has exercised her knowledge, listening and analytic skills, application of law, discretion in delivering her decision in the interest of justice and fairness.
Additionally, her contributions to Nan-Yang Press, Sin Chew Jit Poh, where she shares insights on strata and property issues, demonstrate her commitment to knowledge sharing and community engagement. She is also being invited by KL Bar, Selangor Bar and others private entities to share her knowledges through webinars.
Valerie attributes her success to several key factors: boldness in venturing into the unknown, perseverance in the face of adversity, the ability to envision and resolve problems, a positive mindset, and kindness to people, animals, and the environment. These qualities have not only propelled her personal and professional growth but have also inspired those around her to strive for excellence.
